Lib Dems welcome action on plastic waste

Plastic bottle deposit scheme - and no more plastic bottles on Bournemouth seafront.

The government has announced that the public will soon have to pay a deposit on each plastic bottle in order to encourage recycling. The bottle can be returned and the deposit reclaimed.

The Liberal Democrats strongly support this policy; many European countries have already enforced similar schemes, which have proven to be a success.

However, this policy does not go far enough to combat plastic waste and protect our environment. We urge the government to commit to spending any money left over from the deposit scheme on environmental programmes that promote sustainability and conservationism.

A Spokesman for Bournemouth Liberal Democrats added, "In addition to this new measure from government we are very pleased to see Bournemouth Borough Council agreeing to end the use of single-use plastic bottles in seafront catering outlets this summer.

It has been a long, long slog getting this message across but we're delighted that people now appear to be acting".
