Research from Churchill Car Insurance has revealed that drivers across the UK are wasting nearly £2.2bn every year because they don't have the right change to pay for parking,
According to the study, the average amount overpaid is £2.68 per week, working out as £139.36 every year per driver.
Commenting, Liberal Democrat Transport spokesperson Baroness Randerson said:
“These figures show a system that relies on members of the public being forced to overspend as part of the business model.
“We have the technology now for contactless card or phone payment. This would increase the efficiency of paying for a parking space and would avoid drivers wasting an average of about £140 per year by overpaying.
“This is essentially a hidden charge for mums in a rush for work, or dads running late on the school run. In the modern world where this is easily avoidable, car park operators should undergo the necessary modernisation.
