Housing and the green belt

Having somewhere decent to live is one of the most important issues in anyone's life. It is also important for Bournemouth as a town that we are able to house our children and grandchildren who want to live here. We also need homes for those working in our public services like teachers and nurses as well as homes for other workers to ensure the success of our local economy.

We have a precious town, with a green belt Lib Dems are committed to protecting and enhancing, plus open spaces like parks and beaches which we all value.

The Lib Dems on Bournemouth Council have made housing a priority and are succeeding in the following areas:

  • Awarded the prestigious "Beacon status" for our work on reducing homelessness

  • Exceed the national quality standards for our Council homes, years ahead of target

  • Registered landlord scheme for the private rented sector to ensure quality controls

  • Helped set up Park Home Resident's Association, and campaigning to get equal treatment from water companies, flood protection and other services.

Green Belt victory

The Government is forcing us to allow more homes to be built in Bournemouth. The regional assembly's initial view was that meant we had to build on our green belt. Months of tough negotiating by your local Lib Dem Councillors means that threat is being removed. While others talk about the green belt Lib Dems get on and save it!

Our local environment

The quality of our local environment is important to our quality of life. Here are just some of the things that Lib Dems on Bournemouth Council have worked on:

  • High quality parks and gardens, winning six Green flag awards. These are tough quality standards and we have more flags than anywhere else in the South West.

  • Best beach in Britain, with improving cleanliness, toilets and disabled access.

  • Faster dumped car removals, so they no longer remain an eyesore and fire risk as they used to.
