Green Light for recycling

Big Bin and Little Bin

Your 'Big Bin' for recyclables, 'Little Bin' for what's left.

The contract for the "blue bag" recycling scheme (1st introduced by Lib Dems) ends in August 2006. This will be the first opportunity for a new contract that will add plastic & cardboard to the paper, cans and textiles already collected. This will make it one of the best services in the UK.

Planning and talking to residents about the details will now start, and has included a door to door survey to see what residents most want.

Energy efficiency

Using less energy is one way of reducing harmful carbon emissions. Under the Lib Dems the Council is taking this seriously. Here a few examples:

  • Council buys "green power" as part of it's electric and gas needs

  • All Council Departments have targets to improve energy efficiency (and reduce Council Tax bills). A fund has been set up to help with this, for instance to buy better insulation or energy saving equipment.

  • Use of electric and LPG fuels for council vehicles

The Council also supports the work giving residents grants and encouraging energy efficiency in local homes and businesses.

Micro power

Lib Dem Councillors have recently passed a motion supporting the forthcoming Microgeneration Bill, soon to be debated in the House of Commons.

Microgeneration means the generation of energy by householders in their own homes. This can be done in a variety of ways, such as solar, wind and "micro combined heat and power", and will help to deal with the energy problems that are facing us all nationally and globally.

The Council is hoping that success of the Bill will mean more residents wanting to generate their own energy in order to tackle climate change and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
