New scheme to replace blue bags

Bournemouth Tories have been slammed for accusing the Lib Dem Council of doing nothing on recycling - even though a major revamp is taking place later this year that has been voted on by all councillors including the Tories. The misleading claim has been made in the Tories' political newspaper "Bournemouth Press".

"Either the Tories are so out of touch that they can't even remember what the Council has voted for, or they deliberately want to hide the facts from Bournemouth residents," says Boscombe Lib Dem councillor, Ben Prescott.

The Tories even say they want Bournemouth to follow the much-criticised scheme brought in by the Conservatives in Poole. Residents there ended up with wheelie bins that were too small and the service was messed up for people living in flats! "This shows how Conservative claims on efficiency don't stack up," says Cllr Ben Prescott.

RECYCLING FACTS

  • The current blue bag recycling scheme was introduced in 1996 when the Lib Dems ran the Council.

  • The Tories failed to improve the scheme when they ran the Council from 1999 to 2003

  • The new wheelie-bin based scheme will be launched at the end of August 2006 and is the result of a Lib Dem manifesto pledge
