Lib Dem Council calls in Government over Post Office Accounts

5.00.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 30th May 2006

Councillors will be examining the future of our Post Offices at a special meeting on June 1st.

The Developing Communities and Tackling Crime Scrutiny Panel will be discussing ways to lobby the Government over the Post Office account. Funding ends for the scheme in 2010.

It was introduced in April 2003 as part of the move to pay benefits and pensions into an account, and support Labour Government policy to scrap pension books.

"I feel very strongly about this issue, and urge others that do so to come along to the meeting," says Councillor Emily Morrell-Cross.

"4.25 million decided to use the Post Office card account, and now the Government is taking that choice away."

Interested parties already attending the meeting are Age Concern, the Citizens Advice Bureau and Help and Care. The meeting is being held in the HMS Phoebe Room at the Town Hall and begins at 4pm.

For more information on attending the meeting contact Karen Tompkins on 01202 451255 or Cllr Emily Morrell-Cross on 01202 771188.
